Texas Rangers Player Values - 2012
By Dan Allsup
The Rangers just handed out some team hardware for their best players. Here's a breakdown of how good everyone was last year, relative to their pay. The two most important numbers in baseball just might be WAR and salary. So let's see who was really the most valuable Ranger of 2012.
We did this in 2011, and Matt Harrison was easily the most valuable Ranger, however his salary increased six-fold, unfortunately his WAR didn't increase to 24, it did increase but not enough to keep with his salary growth.
Valuable doesn't mean the best, to me it just means the best allotment of money, or a bargain. The best player obviously was Adrian Beltre, but he wasn't the best value. Being the best player means you’re worth the most, which Beltre easily was.
* Value= (WAR/Salary).
^ Worth= (5 X WAR) this is because the price per win above replacement has been generally accepted to be $5 million.
# Surplus= (Worth- Salary) this is done to see how much Texas comes out ahead in their contracts.
