It came out over the weekend that lefty reliever Ron Mahay had announced his retirement. Like many of you, I will never forget where I was when I heard the news.
Mahay joined the Texas ‘pen in June 2003 and wasted no time establishing himself as a fan favorite, both on and off the field. (Even today you can find countless fans at The Ballpark wearing Mahay’s #32 on their replica jerseys.)
Jon Daniels pulled the trigger on the now famous Ron Mahay Trade in July 2007. Mahay (and some infielder whose name I don’t remember) went to Atlanta for a package that included Elvis Andrus, Neftali Feliz, and Matt Harrison.
Even though it was hard to accept at the time, JD was making a move for the future. After back-to-back World Series appearances, it’s hard to imagine where this franchise might be without that trade.
So let’s raise a glass to a former Ranger great. Mahay mesmerized us between the lines and did even more for us outside of them. I’ve no doubt that one day we will see him take his rightful place in the Rangers HOF.
Until that day comes…press on, Ron Mahay.
