I had the pleasure of attending Newberg Night at Rangers’ Ballpark in Arlington last night thanks to Will Batt, @wtbatt on Twitter. My many thanks to him for the ticket and you should give him a follow for the SDI donation. It was a great event, attended by myself, Peter Ellwood and a couple hundred knowledgeable Ranger fans. It was a great event, and one I hope continues for years to come. I’ll let Peter Ellwood recap it for you, but one thing came to mind that I thought we could discuss.
Don Welke, longtime scout was there, and said that other teams have stopped asking about Profar, because the answer is always no. Daniels said that no one is “really” untouchable, but there are players that they think very highly of. So, assuming that Profar will not be traded, we can take that off of the board. That leaves us with two scenarios on the board. All have been covered by SDI, either on Twitter, email or in person, and both are interesting and they are lightning rods for discussion. Without further delay, here they are:
- One writer at SDI (for the sake of anonymity, we’ll call him Eddie) has the opinion that the Rangers will trade Elvis this offseason, and in return they get their replacement for Josh Hamilton. The thought here is that by letting Elvis go into the 2013 season, his trade value is diminished, since Elvis will have only one year of team control. By trading Elvis this offseason, you get back more in a trade since Andrus will have two years of control.
- Another writer, we’ll call him “Peter” has a differing opinion. “Peter” thinks that Profar will start the season at Round Rock, but in May or June, he’ll be called up, and work his way to second base, moving Kinsler to the outfield. “Peter” also thinks the Rangers will trade Elvis in the 2013 off-season, re-opening 2nd for Kinsler. Now, “Eddie” is staunchly against this with the argument that you do not take a Top 3 2nd baseman, an All-Star, and devalue him by moving him to the OF. “Jon Daniels did not sign Kins to be an outfielder,”-”Eddie”
- The last one is not so conventional. This one comes from a few Twitter people out there, and it is: The Rangers re-sign Elvis, move Kinsler to the OF, and Profar steps in at 2nd base, permanently. Again moving Kinsler to the OF, is a huge step, and a controversial one. But with re-signing Elvis, keeping Profar and moving Kinsler to the outfield, then you keep three potential All-Stars not two. The thought here is regardless of where a 30-30 player plays in the field, he’s still a 30-30 player.
No one knows what will happen. Elvis may walk, he may be traded, or he may like it here so much he wants to stay, or JD trades a different piece, which is possible, but you never know. So, we want to hear from you. Below is a poll and we’d like to hear from the fans out there
